Ten car word games, zero equipment

  • Word chain. Someone says a word; the next person must say a word starting with its last letter — CAT → TIGER → RABBIT. No repeats, and if you're stuck you're out. Full rules and variants are on our last letter word game page.
  • I spy. "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with B." Everyone guesses until someone gets it, and the winner spies next. Use colours instead of letters for kids who can't read yet.
  • The alphabet game. Find the letters A to Z, in order, on road signs, number plates, and shopfronts. First to Z wins — or hunt as one team and race your best time.
  • Ghost. Take turns adding one letter to a growing fragment. Whoever completes a real word loses the round — so steer the spelling towards words that end on someone else's turn.
  • Categories. Pick a topic — animals, food, football teams — and take turns naming one. Hesitate or repeat and you're out; the last player standing picks the next topic.
  • I'm going on a picnic. "I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing apples." The next player repeats the list and adds something starting with B, and so on towards Z. Forget one item and you're out.
  • Number plate words. Take the letters from a passing plate — say KRT — and race to find a word that uses them in order: KaRT, or KindeRgarTen. Longest word takes the point.
  • 20 questions. One player thinks of a person, place, or thing. The rest get twenty yes-or-no questions to work out what it is.
  • Rhyme chain. Say a word, then go around the car rhyming with it until someone dries up. That player starts the next round.
  • One-word story. Build a story one word per person. It collapses into nonsense fast, which is the point.

How to play word chain in the car

Word chain earns the top spot because it needs nothing at all — no spotting things out the window, no keeping score — so even the driver can play. One player opens with any word. Each word after that must start with the last letter of the word before it, no word can be used twice, and a player who can't continue is out.

With mixed ages, tilt the rules instead of the effort: adults must use words of five letters or more, kids can repeat words or get a hint on the first letter. A five-second limit per word keeps motorway rounds quick, and restricting the chain to a category — animals only, food only — makes it hard again for grown-ups.

The same game is a road-trip classic in Japan too, chained by syllables instead of letters — it's called shiritori, and it's where our game's endless mode gets its ancestry.

Keep playing after the ride

Our free Endless Word Chain game is word chain with a referee: a real dictionary checks every word (US, UK, Australian, and Canadian English), repeats are rejected automatically, and a countdown timer keeps the pressure on. Chains are scored, so back-seat rivalries can carry on onto the leaderboard. Pick your pace: Fast (10 seconds a word), Classic (15), or Relaxed (30).

Car word game FAQs

Word chain, I spy, the alphabet game, ghost, categories, 20 questions, and memory games like I'm going on a picnic all need nothing but voices. Word chain is the easiest to start: each word must begin with the last letter of the word before it.

One player says any word. The next player must say a word that starts with its last letter — CAT, then TIGER, then RABBIT. No word can be repeated, and a player who gets stuck is out. Add a five-second limit per word to keep it moving.

I spy with colours instead of letters, categories with easy topics like animals, and word chain with help on the first letter all work from about age four. Let younger kids repeat words or take longer turns so everyone stays in the game.

Passengers can. Word Chain runs free in any phone browser — no app and no sign-up. A real dictionary checks every word, so there are no arguments. The driver sticks to the spoken games.
