What is a word chain?

A word chain is a row of words linked together by a simple rule. The two most popular kinds are last-letter chains, where each word must begin with the final letter of the word before it — CAT → TIGER → RABBIT — a game known in Japan as shiritori, and compound-word chains, where every neighbouring pair of words joins into a real compound word — RUN → DOWN → TOWN gives you rundown and downtown.

Word Chain Game lets you play both, free in your browser — no app, no login, nothing to install. Race the clock in the endless last-letter word game, or take on the once-a-day compound-word puzzle and keep your streak alive.

How to play

Endless Word Chain: type any word to start the chain. Every new word must begin with the last letter of the word before it, be at least three letters long, be a real dictionary word, and can't repeat. Each valid word resets the timer — 15 seconds in classic mode, 10 in fast, 30 in relaxed. When the clock runs out, your chain is scored. Read the full how-to-play guide.

Daily Word Chain Puzzle: arrange the scrambled blocks so every neighbouring pair forms a compound word. One block is locked as your anchor, and you get four tries to order the whole chain. A new puzzle drops every day — play today's puzzle.
